Earth Day

Earth Day 2010

Was amazing! Thanks to all the volunteers that helped make it happen!

Community members young and old celebrate Earth Day with style, fusing trash and fashion on the runway.

April 22nd, 2010 is the 40th Anniversary for the global celebration of Earth Day. Earth Day is celebrated around the world by communities, businesses, countries and individuals in a variety of unique ways. None quite compare, however, to the local event in Fernie! This year, the community Earth Day celebration is back, highlighting interactive booths, food, drinks, music and the much-anticipated Trashy But Flashy Fashion Show!

Earth Day events are taking place at the Fernie Community Centre on Thursday, April 22nd at 5:00 PM. From 5:00 to 7:00, join us to check out some of the creative pieces of functional art created by Isabella Dickens Elementary School Grade 5 and 6’s. Pick up a free tree to plant. Participate in some interactive games. Enjoy some delicious food, and learn about some of the local green options in our community. New this year to our event is a ‘Freecycle Table.’ Community members are welcome to bring their gently used toys, clothing, equipment and books to the Community Centre anytime on the 22nd. All items will be free for the community to trade and take home. We hope to encourage sharing, reusing and recycling!

The highlight of Earth Day for many is the annual Trashy But Flashy Fashion Show. For the 4th year in a row, the Fashion Show aims to inspire the community to assess their consumption patterns by demonstrating creative methods of re-using. Previous years have featured: a biodegradable packing peanuts and rice cracker packaging dress; a bubble wrap tuxedo; a coffee filter dress; and a young warrior created from coffee and flour bags. No fashion show would be complete without a make-up artist, a catwalk, lights, and a DJ. There is a place for every style, age and ability. Cash prizes are distributed for a number of categories, and all entrants receive a t-shirt. A panel of judges will be looking for elements of recycled material used, unique use of materials, creativity, and craftsmanship.

If you would like to participate or be a volunteer for Earth Day this year, email us at info@trashybutflashy.com. We are still accepting entries for the Fashion Show. Find application forms, pictures from previous years and more information about the event at www.trashybutflashy.com.

The Trashy but Flashy Fashion show is a project of the Rocky Mountain Education Series coordinated through the Wildsight Elk Valley branch. The Rocky Mountain Education Series works offers programs to inspire and empower youth to take leadership in making positive environmental and behavioral change (www.beyondrecycling.ca). Sorry 2 Interrupt
The cool response to global warming: Earth Day Canada’s sorry2interrupt email picture campaign, is where Canadians use camera phones or digital cameras to let the world know what they want Canada to do about Global Warming.

We’re asking everyone the same question, GLOBAL WARMING: WHAT DO U WANT CANADA 2 DO? sorry2interrupt, but this question is too important not to.

Watch for the Earth Day Sorry2Interrupt volunteers around the community on April 22nd. We'll be out there interrupting your day with this important question, and our camera to capture YOUR answer. All the photos will be compiled into a slideshow for the evenings Trashy but Flashy event.

So pass it on! Have your say. Let everyone know that you’re sorry2interrupt, but you can’t do it alone.
